Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the textual trajectories (Rymes, 2012) of the murder of Cláudia Silva Ferreira, yet another victim of the “shoot to kill policy” established by the bionecropolitics (Lima, 2018) in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Another “necrótopo”, term that I create here from Bakhtin (1997), Foucault (2008a e 2010) e Mbembe (2003) in order to refer to the recorrent deaths of black people. On March 16, 2014, a general services assistant, mother and black woman, left home to buy bread at Morro da Congonha, in Madureira when she was shot by the military police. According to them, the coffee cup that Claudia was carrying would have been mistaken for a gun. She had her body thrown in the trunk of a police car. The police officers, when supposedly trying to help her, dragged her body for about 300 meters on the way to the hospital. Cláudia’s death, which would be just another example of accidental death of residents of poor communities in the city, but an amateur cameraman filmed the dragging and sold the video to the newspaper Extra. From  then on, the news of the death of the “dragged woman”, the way Cláudia was described by most of the media, circulated through several media: TV programs, online and printed versions of several newspapers in Brazil and in the world, social networks of activists, etc. In the data selected, I focus on the discursive clashes made from publications such as Jornal Extra; the G1 portal and the SBT RJ newscast. Taking this circulation into account, I intend to investigate what scalar projections (Carr and Lempert, 2016) are made from the entextualizations of news of Cláudia’s murder and what they indexicalize. As I look at the data, under a performative view of language, Austin (1960; 1990), I realize that there seems to be frictions between scalar projections that index violence (necrotopes), inheritances of racism that is structural (Almeida, 2019) and to projections that refute cartographies of violence and speech acts that hurt and propose cartographies of reexistence in which name, face and dignity are claimed for Cláudia.

Keywords: necrótopo – bionecropolitics – scale – indexicality – circulation – reexistence.

Orientador(a):  Prof(a). Dr(a). Kátia Cristina do Amaral Tavares

Abstract

Considering computer mediated communication and the digital technologies of information and communication in Education, the present research aims at identifying the uses of the educational social network Edmodo by students and teachers and evaluate, according the participants’ point of view, the use of this platform. To this intent, a case study of ethnographic matrix was developed in the context of an interdisciplinary project in a public federal school in Rio de Janeiro with sixth grade classes. This investigation has been grounded on theoretical foundations about social network (ELLISEN & BOYD, 2008; RECUERO, 2010), educational social networks (CARLSON & RAPHAEL, 2015; SANDU, 2015; GAY, 2017) and Activity Theory (ENGESTRÖM,1987,1999; DANIELS, 2003). Data were generated through online questionnaires and the record of online messages exchanged between the participants in Edmodo. Adopting the perspective of Activity Theory and considering the research context as a network of activities, data were analysed based on the description of the following activity systems: Implementing actions of the project and Using Edmodo followed by the reading of the messages in Edmodo and the categorization of meaning cores. The results show that Edmodo was used as
learning tool and means of communication by students and as means of communication, repository, flipped classroom and feedback instrument by teachers. Data suggest the existence of conflicts related to rules and division of labor. Despite the conflicts identified, the participants evaluated the experience with Edmodo positively and indicate interest in using it again in future opportunities.

Orientador(a):  Prof(a). Dr(a). Kátia Cristina do Amaral Tavares

Abstract

This case study aims at investigating a group in a course on academic language, writing, and skills in English within a collaborative approach with DICT mediation in a Licenciatura in
Languages in a rural federal university in Baixada Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The research goal is to understand if and how students participate actively and collaboratively among
themselves in the three environments (face-to- face classroom, a group on WhatsApp app, and smaller groups on Google Docs on Google Drive) in the planned collaborative activities
Furthermore, this case study aims at describing and analyzing the participants’ assumptions on collaboration and learning in the process of academic skill development, specially of academic
writing. This research is expected to contribute to the reflection on technology mediation and student-centered learning approaches. In addition, this study may contribute to discussions on
the academic writing learning process in this context. In order to address the research questions, the following search instruments were used: a semi-open questionnaire, an open questionnaire, the professor’s journal notes, and the records on the digital tools of the apps. The data on participation and collaboration among the professor and students in the process were analyzed based on collaborative learning theory, mainly on seis criteria which were defined to assess if the students cooperate or collaborate in the activities in group’s the environments. (DILLENBOURG 1996; KENCZINSKI et al 2007) These criteria are division of labor, objectives, dynamics, hierarchy, competencies and communication. I intended to describe and analyze how students behaved in each of these criteria in the focused learning process. Factors which helped or hindered this collaboration among the students and professor were also targeted. These factors were mostly affective aspects, such as fear of being exposed, lack of self-confidence in their language skills, and resistance to digital technology tools. It is also expected that this research could contribute to the discussion on methodology on higher education, as collaborative, meaningful, and inclusive learning approaches mediated by technology tools that enhance collaboration among students and professors.

Orientador(a):  Prof(a). Dr(a).

Abstract

This thesis is the construction of a study created by the affects experienced by me when I knew the ruins of the abandoned buildings by IBGE, living with its residents and their life stories for four years, a period in which I had contact with stories of life and experiences that circulated in different contexts such as conversations between residents, journalistic texts, and political speeches. Considering the innumerable entextualizations of narratives about the so-called occupation of IBGE-Mangueira, carried out not only by me in my cartographic diary but also by residents of Morro da Mangueira, by the media and by governmental institutions, the objective of this study is to map the circulation of these texts, paying attention to the use of multiple semiotic resources and the ideologies they point to. The research is methodologically designed by the procedural, qualitative and investigative character of the cartographic method. In theoretical-analytical terms, it associates a performative view of language to the concept of entextualization (BAUMAN & BRIGGS, 1990) and scalability (TSING, 2012). Throughout the cartographic tracking, I reconstruct the public policies of urbanization and habitation that over the centuries have been implemented in Brazil and in the city of Rio de Janeiro, characterizing them as scalable projects, that is, projects that expand with little or almost no change. According to this mode of circulation, called self-contained, speeches and actions by official bodies produced and still produce the occupation of the city according to parameters of socio-spatial segregation. However, self-contention coexists with other forms of performative  movement of speeches, texts and practices: the contamination. The speeches and experiences of residents of the Morro da Mangueira entextualized from my cartographic diary point to other ways of life that do not fit in the legitimate urbanization patterns. When I tracked part of the speeches produced by residents of IBGE-Mangueira, observing the intensities and potential of their voices, I highlighted the resistance forces and the permanent battles for survival practices amid the territory wreckage. I accompany the struggle waged semiotic and micropolitically in conquering the demand for a decent habitation and the “right to exist and lead a livable life” (BUTLER, 2015). In such initiatives it is necessary to contaminate yourself, i.e. adapt yourself to the territory and the “available” conditions and, from this point on, reinvent the existence. By juxtaposing two ways of circulation of texts and speeches, self-contained and contaminated, this work reflects on the effects of urban and housing public policies that have been implemented in Brazil over the centuries and on the urgency of the universalization of the right to habitation
and the city in an equal way.

Abstract

This thesis aims at studying how the communication of the impeachment of former President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff was constructed. Taking the voting session in the lower house of
Parliament as the central point for the process, I run a corpus analysis which indicates that the sign “family” has great relevance in this session. Based on said relevance, I employ the methodological strategy of tracking textual trajectories (BLOMMAERT, 2005; FABRICIO, 2012) to understand how the speeches of congressmen and women respond intertextually
(BAKHTIN, 1981a) to previous and posterior texts. Based on a performative view of language (PENNYCOOK, 2010), I understand meaning-making as discursively constructed in the moment
of enunciation. Results indicate that congressmen‟s high performances (COUPLAND, 2007) respond to metapragmatic conditions of emergence of such performances. Such conditions
indexically created a general metapragmatic key which opposes the Nation and corruption, when 11 constructing Dilma‟s impeachment. In the performances of congressmen, this key is
recontextualized, having the family as the fundamental cell of the Nation. This imbrication family-nation binds together social meanings of patriarchy, heteronormativity and nationalism
which would be the basis of the Temer administration as well as of the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018.

Abstract

In this work, I analyze the corporeal-discursive production of intimate and erotic pleasure on Chaturbate, a sexcam platform in which people develop explicit sexual performances for an audience via webcam. As my primary unit of analysis, I take the Lovense Lush, a vibrator that can be controlled remotely by the audience during these shows, to study how both apparatuses (Foucault, 2009[1982]; Agamben, 2009), along with language, participate in the carnal activity and develop ways of getting in touch that, during the event, reaffirm and undermine senses of what we understand by “sex”, “body”, “person”, “technology”, “touch”, “pleasure”, “eroticism”, and “intimacy”. Relying on a performative view of language (Austin, 1990[1962]; Pennycook, 2007), internet ethnographic research (Hine, 2001, 2005, 2012, 2015), and discussions about the current political moment (Deleuze, 1992[1990]; Hardt & Negri, 2004; Guyer, 2016; Preciado,
2018[2008]), I investigate how the construction of a so-called (and “essentially human”) “natural body” is reproduced and negotiated in sociodiscursive interactions that happen on Chaturbate through semiotic and technological repertoires that perform and create what is traditionally understood as “sexual practice”, and in which the Lush vibrator, as a “copy of the penis” (Preciado, 2014[2000]), has the main role. The focus is to explore not only how “bodies” are “touched” by interactions in the platform in question, but also how these very “bodies” built themselves as such in these events, elaborating, performatively, the ontology of their own realities and developing ways of perceiving and expressing sexual and corporeal feelings. Thereby, I expand the idea of linguistic performance beyond the “human” (Pennycook, 2018) and start considering other apparatuses as active agents in the composition of social practices (Latour, 2012).

Abstract

Starting from the notion of discourse, our proposal is to study the Cancioneiro dos Ciganos, by Mello Moraes Filho, combining theoretical contributions from some areas of knowledge such as Applied Linguistics, Literature, History and Ethnography to inquire about the identity of the gypsy people with focus on the city of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The image of the gypsies was built from a prejudiced and Eurocentric point of view, associating them with the worst in society: thieves, deceivers, false and uneducated. This stereotype is reinforced by the discourse of the author who compiled the cancioneiro, with the pretension of showing, through the verses, the gypsy identity, however, what we verified is only the ratification of this discourse, which does not give voice to the gypsy people, even if that has been the proposal. We then turn to other discourses and theories in order to delineate the ethos of the discourse of the gypsy people in Brazil, which mixes with the ethos itself, since it is the less prestigious places of the city that shelter these people.

Orientador(a):  Prof. Dr. Luis Paulo Moita Lopes

Abstract

IThis thesis addresses how the civilization project was carried out in Brazil during the Second Empire (1840-1889). To this end, we have analyzed the diaries and speeches from the throne
of D. Pedro II, relating these speeches to the civilizational actions taken by the Empire. The Brazilian national state was born from the transfer of the Portuguese crown to Brazil. In the
Second Empire, the symbolic construction of nationality gained strength as a political project for the nation and counted on a strong investment in institutions, laws, books, etc., especially
on the part of the Emperor, who was active at key moments in the proposed reforms. The present work raises a discussion about the difficulties of establishing the civilization project within a
slave-based agroexport economy. We point out how contradictory the ideal of civilization was when it sought to establish society as an ideal nation, based on the “European society”, but that
kept slavery for eighty years and excluded the indigenous population from its project. It is clear that from the very beginning the nation had been thought by and for an elite, who justified their actions due to the country’s stage of economic development. For the analysis of the present work, we used Pêcheux and Orlandi’s Discourse Analysis, which allowed to relate language
with the materialist perspective of history, in dialogue with Marx, Florestan Fernandes, and Caio Prado Jr., among others. In addition, we based our discussion about the civilizing project
and the construction of the national state in Brazil on the studies of Afonso Carlos Marques dos Santos. This way, the research conceives the discursive strategies of the analyzed documents
as ideological practices within a specific context. In the speeches of D. Pedro II it is noted that there are no disinterested practices. Thus, we show how civilizing actions and discourses were
justified based on an ideal of nation, but whose purpose was to maintain the monarchical form of government.

Keywords: D. Pedro II, civilizing project, 19th century, discourse.

Abstract

Language touches every inch of our skin. Even the genitals, covered by fabric and pudency, by silence and fear, cannot be hidden from language that produces material effects on us. This
thesis investigates the material production of affection on bodies through semiotic stimuli. Therefore, the analysis deals with intimate-spectacular performances of the self in a specific
context: virtual groups on WhatsApp for the performance of bareback – a popular term to refer to consented anal sex without condoms among men – desire. The online performances of
bareback desire act on bodies, interact with them. Therefore, its desiring speech acts are invested with analytical interest guided by the lenses of the
affective triggers of discourse
(Bonfante, 2018): any linguistic fact or resource that indexes an affection. Observing the affective triggers of discourse allows us to understand how body, affection and discourse
intertwine, both theoretically and in the local discursive-sexual practices. In addition to the affective discourse triggers, other theoretical-analytical instruments permeate the analysis of
the intimate-spectacular performances:
indexicality, sedimentative and immediate perlocutionary, concepts that inform the methodology that guides the reflection: the Erotic of the Signs, whose analytical foci are sex tapes, nudes, dense descriptions of intimate details of the body, ads for sexual partners, verbal sex and other performances that spectacularize intimacy through the description / construction of body parts. My research questions do not only interrogate the ways in which intimate-spectacular performances are put on and how they affect their interlocutors / consumers, altering the states of their bodies. They also tension the universality of ethical-methodological concepts like consent and intimacy and challenge positivist perspectives on language, as they explore sensual interactions with the cell phone in language’s bodegas and alleys, condemned to obscurantism by the anxiety caused by the fluid
and pleasurable body. Body that pulsates in this dissertation inflated with individualistic desires inculcated by the promise of neoliberal freedoms. Some of the conclusions of this
writing are that in the intimate-spectacular society, the pleasures of the performed body and the contours of the genitalia performed semiotically are relevant producers of subjectivity and
intelligibility in the construction of the political subject, in the construction of a semiotic research methodology and in the construction of a more ethical social world, in which sexual
health is truly democratized.

Abstract

This transdisciplinary research is interested in civil-global wars (HARDT & NEGRI, [2004]2014) and in how experiences which contemporary conflicts generate are constructed through frames that materialise as texts and circulate in a multisemiotic way (i.e. articulating verbal, visual and digital dimensions). Drawing on Butler (2010), this thesis takes as its object and focus the frames of conflict that involve children and the participation of an infantile body in the communication of the War in Syria, here understood through the Actor-network Theory (LATOUR,2012) as a controversial network of hybrid relationships between human and non-human participants. The specific focus is directed towards the photograph of a 3-year-old refugee boy, A(y)lan Kurdi, who passed away whilst trying to escape the war in 2015. This photo (exposing the toddler ́s dead body) has generated textual trajectories and transmedia disputes responsible for making visible semiotic work (KRESS, 2015) and (de)stabilisations in the communication of this war between domains of power-knowledge (FOUCAULT, [1970]1990) such as the media spaces of expert journalism and social media. Transculturally, these trajectories gave rise to a digital event (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2015a, p.318) which has been translingually disseminated, firstly circulating in Turkish, on Twitter, as #KiyiyaVuranInsanlik, being, later, ‘translated’ into English in a broader sense to the rest of the globe as #HumanityWashedAshore. The software NodeXL has been used to access the transmedia trajectories and generate the corpus of digital texts comprising pieces of news, translingual tweets, memetic images and expressions attached to hashtags from Twitter and Facebook (SOUZA JÚNIOR, 2018). NodeXL has returned 11,008 posts related to the digital event. Guided by Latour (2012), oligoptic methodological procedures generated compilations of hyperlinks and posts which have been explored, selected and discussed following quali-quantitative criteria of relevance to generate intelligibility about the circulation of the event. Taking this digital event as a social event, this thesis has sought to understand through a post-colonial ethical perspective (VENN, 2000) how biopolitical (FOUCAULT ([1977-1978], 2008) and geopolitical repertoires (dis)orient the relational and sociohistorically situated co-production of subjects/alterities, (re)interpretations and on-line textual disputes that (re) framed: 1) the conflict itself; 2) (i)mobility crises and border operations (MEZZADRA & NEILSON, 2013); and 3) war effects (i.e. the death of toddlers). These (re) framings point, on one hand, to the textual disputes and the ethico-normative way through which ‘media courts’ performatively (BUTLER, 1997) produce frames via textual purification or visual injury, deriving modes of hierarchisation, dichotomies and dislocation or omissions and invisibilisation that ‘authorise’ the dehumanisation of refugees. On the other hand, the reinterpretations developed through repetition and circulation denounce and undermine the normativity of such courts, exposing their operationalisation of selective recognition. More egalitarian forms of recognition have emerged as an effect of iterability, which, through circulation, repeats but transforms (DERRIDA, [1971]1991), giving room to ethico-reflexive relationships that demanded the right to mourn linked to the humanisation of the dead child. The notions of ‘childhood’ and ‘angel’ have played an important part in the dynamics that humanised A(y)lan. By observing the on-line disputes, this research points out that reinterpretations, resignifications and destabilisations across media spaces impact a certain monopoly of expert journalism in relation to how it used to dominate or lead the work of reporting ‘realities’ about situations of conflict (for example, in the Vietnam War). Involving notions of ‘truth’, ‘belief’, ‘fake’ and ‘memes’ in on-line
circulation, those communicational (de)stabilisations make visible an emerging transmedia configuration that points to changes in the contemporary social order, when in textual disputes, socio-technically, this configuration connects people, technological devices (e.g. computers or Smartphones), algorithms and war/crisis contexts to the media domain as a dimension of power-knowledge. This dimension communicates and, while communicating, it exerts its power, since it can forge what we see. For this, that domain can (dis)orient our visual field when attention, as a ‘productive commodity’, intensifies the translocal circulation of a discourse of war and crisis and the disputes involving what/who emerges associated with the circulation of that hybrid discourse. The research reflects on the impact of digital action and the collective-collaborative semiotic work of social media over journalism and reinterprets these domains of media power-knowledge. As it stands, this thesis proposes to update the concept of order of discourse (FOUCAULT, [1970]1990) by recognising 8 characteristics of the abovementioned emergent configuration and naming it the transmedia order of discourse.

Abstract

In this research, we are proposed, in general, conducting a study of the mechanisms which configure the self-fictional discourses as well as the relational articulations between history, fiction, discourse, ideology, identity and culture, through literature, in accordance with Applied Linguistics, using as corpus of analysis one literary production, belonging to the Bolivian Literature, related to the Bolivian Independence War historical period (1809-1825), entitled JUAN DE LA ROSA: Memorias del último soldado de la Independencia, by Nataniel Aguirre, published in 1885. Our focus, in this research, is transculturality as a discursive constructor of the idea of nation in the referred work. Applied Linguistics guided this work, that is a methodologically analytical, qualitative and bibliographical work, involving some theorists who are in the field of Applied Linguistics. In our analysis we focus on the following questions: how is Bolivian identity constructed discursively in the work? What ideologies guide this construction? These and other questions are answered along this investigation. We base this work based on theorists who approach the following questions: culture with Bhabha (2005) and Said (1995), identity with Hall (2006), historicity with Guinsburg (2011, 2017) and speech with Bakhtin (2000, 2002, 2009, 2010).

Abstract

This research aims to understand how the biopolitics in the contemporary Brazilian Amazon has been making the lives of gender/sexuality dissidents precarious as regards their sexual
healthcare (BUTLER, 1990; 1993; 1997), legitimizing an LGBT-phobic conjuncture. Based on the understanding that Biopolitics (FOUCAULT, [1975-76]1999; [1976]1999; [1977-78]2008) in modern societies is structured around various regimes of power dispersed through social institutions such as the State, families, school, the media and religion, this research endeavors to discuss some problems which can be associated with the emergence of this current state of affairs. In order to meet this objective, an ethnographic study was conducted (CLIFFORD, [1994]2002; PEIRANO, 2008, 2014) between 2016 and 2019 with LGBTI+ youth, mostly college student gay men and MSM, in the context of parties, smaller reunions taking place right after a major party (so called ‘after parties’ in Portuguese) and daily interactions in student shared homes in the Brazilian Amazon, in the interior of the country. The analysis focuses on the narrative performances (WORTHAM, 2001) of gay and MSM research participants, who engage in metapragmatic disputes (SILVA, FERREIRA & ALENCAR, 2014; GONZALEZ & MOITA LOPES, 2018) when confronted with the official guidelines issued by the Brazilian health authorities and the place attributed by them to the promotion of the LGBTI+ population sexual healthcare. In examiming the indexicality (SILVERSTEIN, 1993; 2003) and entextualization (BAUMAN & BRIGGS, 1990) processes mobilized in the construction of the sexual healthcare practices in the present decade (2011-2020), this thesis argues that the official Biopolitics silences and erases the lifestyles and the rights to sexual healthcare of the LGBTI+ population. It concludes that the practices of
resistance and survival in the context of precarious sexual health among LGBTI+ individuals who were identified in the situated social experiences analyzed in this thesis question the official Biopolitics and the maintenance of the LGBT-phobic current regime. It is therefore vital that the guidelines already established by the Brazilian National Strategy for LGBT Health (BRASIL, 2013) be implemented immediately and that other measures be devised and made effective in accordance with the principles of the New Health Promotion (AYRES, PAIVA & FRANÇA JÚNIOR, 2012) by the Brazilian National Health Service. These changes will thereby protect the access of historically marginalized groups, such as the LGBTI+ population, to their rights.

Abstract

Based on the assumption that the learning processes of whiteness are performative, get repeated since our childhood and permeate our family, friendship, work and academic interactions, I
investigate how ideologies of race appear in conversations about racism in a public school in Rio de Janeiro. These conversations were developed by teachers as part of a project entitled SAY NO TO RACISM at the PUBLIC SCHOOL DIÁLOGOS. Following a qualitative methodology combined with ethnographic procedures, I reflect on how, in these interactions, discourses of
whiteness appear, act and are recontextualized. In the interpretation of the data, I focus on indexical cues and interactional positionings (WORTHAM, 2001), observing the processes of
(re) entextualization (BAUMAN; BRIGGS, 2006) of whiteness discourses that underlie the conversations about racism. Adopting a performative view of language, I take indexicality
(BLOMMAERT; MALY, 2014; SILVERSTEIN, 2003) as the central construct for the study developed here. I analyze the repetition of signs that point to specific texts and time-spaces, paying attention to how texts and chronotopes (BLOOMMAERT; DE FINA, 2017) are evoked in these interactions. I observe how, in conversations about racism, identification and disidentification (MUÑOZ, 1999) with performances of whiteness are at play. In the analysis of the cues mobilized and of the chronotopes evoked in the interactions, I observe how whiteness operates as a system, creating stability according to a certain script of performances of the Brazilian white racial identity. Amidst repetition, however, some nuances of identity resignification indicate more reflexive performances. In the interactions focused here, beliefs in racial democracy conflict with understandings that whites are part of a socialization process in which everyone learns to be racist. Such coexistence may question the discourse of racial democracy and contribute to the unlearning of racism. The study shows that more reflective performances of whiteness can interfere with the mechanisms that make racism work. However, such reflection involves a process of racialization of whiteness (BENTO, 2002). In my case, as a white teacher and researcher, this critical-reflexive process became central to the contours of the interpretation of the research data and the writing of this thesis. Learning about self-listening and place of listening seems to be the first step in the process of unlearning ingrained and structuring racist beliefs in Brazilian society.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the linguistic policies of Libras implemented between 2002 – 2018. In this sense, we analyze how the linguistic policies are configured in the legal provisions
(Laws and Decrees) that deal with the subject. We seek to identify the perception of deaf and non-deaf people about the consequences of the policies implemented in recent years, as well as
to verify which policies are necessary for the future. The making of linguistic policies has always been the object of governments and has always occurred in social practices. In this
perspective, from the point of view of the effects produced, linguistic policy can be right or harmful. Thus, by its very nature, this field operationalizes interventions on languages, that is,
it promotes actions for the planning and management of plurilingualism. The present research is characterized as qualitative with a critical orientation (therefore, with the objective of
promoting social change). The main instruments of data generation selected for the investigation were document analysis and the interview. In order to do that, we elaborated two
questionnaires. In the first one, the questions the participants were asked aimed at producing statements without preventing the emergence of new topics during the interview. The second
questionnaire was organized into more specific categories based on the typology of Reagan (2010) for the actions of linguistic planning. In the first block, information on advances and
limitations in the linguistic situation was sought. In the second block, the questions orbit social representations about Libras, educational policy, acquisition policy, linguistic risks, and
translation and interpretation policy. The research is based on works by Reagan (2010), Lagares (2019), Calvet (2007), Oliveira (2009), Hamel (2013), Altenhofen (2013), Strobel (2006),
Quadros (2014), Stumpf (2005), Rajagopalan (2013). The results showed a significant improvement in the linguistic planning of Libras since 2002. However, there are significant limitations in the linguistic planning of the acquisition of Libras, in educational policies designed within the deaf perspective, and expressive impacts in the absence of clear policies in spaces such as the context of Health and Justice.

Abstract

This PhD study aims at developing and applying a teaching English material for fifth graders at a public municipal school in Rio de Janeiro. The purpose of this research is to investigate two aspects: the teaching material, in order to understand to what extent the theme and the activities developed promote the learning of English through meaningful practices, and how the interactions constructed between the teacher and students during the use of the teaching material contribute to children engagement in critical literacy practices. To accomplish these objectives, this research, by means of an ethnographic approach (WATSON-GEGEO, 1988; FLICK, 2009; MELLO; REES, 2010; LÜDKE; ANDRÉ, 2013) and a dialogic perspective (BAKHTIN, 1979 [1997]; 2002a; 2002b; VOLÓCHINOV, 1929 [2017]; BRAIT, 2015; 2018), is oriented by a Bakhtinian concept of language (BAKHTIN, 1979 [1997]; 2002a; 2002b; VOLÓCHINOV, 1929 [2017]), a
sociocultural (VYGOTSKY, 1978 [1991]; 2010a; 2010b) and critical (PENNYCOOK, 2004; TILIO; 2017b) understanding of teaching and learning, and by the components of the Multiliteracies Pedagogy (COPE; KALANTZIS, 2000; 2015; KALANTZIS; COPE, 2012). The analysis of the English teaching material shows that the thematic discussion about the role of the school uniform, its aesthetics, reasons for using, advantages and disadvantages, and the proposed activities that develop this theme are familiar to students. The teaching material is therefore characterized as a group of meaningful practices that promote the learning of English in a way that makes sense to children. As for the interactions, the data generated point out that children critical engagement is constituted by means of other people’s discourses, and that these voices, which children make their own, come from students’ utterances when they engage in the interactions constructed not only in the classroom, but also during the social practices they experience. Thus, the English teaching material developed for this context has the potential to promote a situated teaching that considers the child as a child and makes it possible to reduce social inequalities in school education, especially in respect to English teaching in elementary
levels. Further contributions of this research are twofold: a) it fosters intelligibilities about the way the participant teacher understands language and the teaching and learning of English; and b) it creates reflections about the practices of the teacher-researcher as teacher, researcher and materials developer. In this regard, this study can be seen as a relevant contribution to English language teaching and teacher education in the context of the Municipal Education Office in Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the discursive circulation of the document that put an end to the gendered uniform division at Colégio Pedro II, a traditional school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It is based on a queer approach to gender and sexuality (SEDGWICK, 1990; BUTLER, 1988, [1990] 2016; SULLIVAN, 2003; RUTI, 2017), which sees social identities not as preexisting
psychological or biological attributes but as discursive effects of performances that take place within intelligibility matrices and regulatory structures. It is also believed that circulation is inherent in texts (SILVERSTEIN; URBAN, 1996; FABRÍCIO, 2015) and  intensified in present times (KELL, 2013); it involves continuous processes of entextualization and resignification (BAUMAN; BRIGGS, 1990; SILVERSTEIN; URBAN, 1996. This research is underpinned by an indisciplinary approach to applied linguistics (MOITA LOPES, [2006] 2016) and makes use of the theoretical-analytical constructs of scale (CARR; LEMPERT, 2016) and indexicality (SILVERSTEIN, 2003, 2006; HIGGINS, 2007; BLOMMAERT, 2005, 2010). Adopting a qualitative approach, it investigates the
internal and external circulation of the school document, respectively analyzing (1) interviews with staff and students, and (2) news articles and posts on social media. The analysis highlights how, along its text trajectories, the school document is embedded within institutional, personal, and legal scales. Some actors value it positively, regarding it as a symbol of the historical, cultural and social advances in contemporary life, as well as a result of democratic practices on the part of a school that understands education within the context of broader social issues. Others, however, entextualize conservative discourses about gender and sexuality, and extricate education from its social context.

Título: Leitura no caderno de atividades pedagógicas de aprendizagem autorregulada

Orientadora: Profa. Dra.

Abstract

This thesis, as a work in Applied Linguistics, verifies that conceptions of reading and reader are brought by the Self-Regulated Learning Pedagogical Activities Notebook as its central object and, at the same time, look for evidence about reading in the guiding documents. For this purpose, official documents and materials that are being called teaching regulatory objects were selected as objects of analysis, since they demonstrate “what is officially thought about teaching” (GERHARDT, 2013). They are: PCNEM (2000), PCN+ (2002), OCEM (2004), DCNEM (2012a) and BNCC (2018) at the national level. And at the state level, Curriculum Minimum/Basic (2017). To support this analysis, I start from the principles taken as a theoretician of Applied Linguistics and studies aimed at understanding the Brazilian school, school literacy practices and linguistic policy (AMORIM, 2014; FULGÊNCIO e LIBERATO, 1992, 2001, 2007; GERHARDT, 2006b, 2016; GERHARDT, ALBUQUERQUE and SILVA, 2009; GERHARDT and VARGAS, 2010; KATO, 1990; KLEIMAN, 2001, 2008, 2010; MARCUSCHI, 1996; RAJAGOPALAN, 2003; ROJO E BATISTA, 2003,2008; among others). In addition, the thesis exposes some views of language and text and aims to understand whether there is an approach to reading in official documents and in the curriculum. Based on this, the study of reading by regulatory documents in school activities brings reflection to this broader discussion about official documents, considering that it is a cognitive construct already assumed by many researchers as defining a mature reading process (BOTELHO, 2017; GERHARDT, 2017; VARGAS, 2017), in which the reader interacts with the text
read and, therefore, must be well known and well worked at school. An approach is used that recognizes the process of building knowledge as being necessarily linked to the commitment to social life and, in particular, to the improvement of public education in our country. If, on the one hand, there is a need for a researcher’s commitment to social life, on the other, and as a consequence, there is also a need for research to reflect “the yearning for the historical moment in which we propose and defend our ideas” (RAJAGOPALAN , 2003). In this sense, the thesis raises the need to think about new paths that question modernity, “causing deep questions about the types of knowledge produced and trying to explain the contemporary changes we are experiencing” (MOITA LOPES, 2006). For this reason, this research is part of this contribution perspective and also seeks to elaborate a thinking about teaching-learning, mainly due to the interest in understanding how official documents and activities developed for the population of Brazilian public schools in the state of Rio de Janeiro can contribute or not to language
education, presenting alternatives for the world in which we live. It is crucial to think about ways of doing research that are also ways of doing politics when thematicizing what is not thematic and listening to the voice of those who are not heard.

Abstract

This study’s aim is to analyze the discursive construction of Brazil in the chronicle of Pero Gândavo, História da Província Santa Cruz a que Vulgarmente Chamamos Brasil (1576) and in the
travel collection of Richard Hakluyt, The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Trafiqques and Discoveries of the English Nation (1589-1600) in a period of intense struggle between Iberia and England in the sixteenth century for the right to possess and exploit the lands of the New World. Gândavo defended the publication of the history of the South Atlantic province and its original name, Holy Cross, to consolidate in Portugal and throughout Europe the Lusitanian political and linguistic right to possess and name the land discovered whereas Hakluyt defended the English’s right in exploring and colonizing regions that were not effectively colonized by the Iberians, such as 5 Brazil, and thus rewrite the English history in the Americas. Gândavo and Hakluyt, thereby, act in the history of their kingdoms, selecting historical facts that allow to defend a right of possession over Brazil. We believe, therefore, that the different histories about Brazil demonstrate that the power struggles between Iberia and England also took place in the editorial field. These books were an arena of discourse struggle for Brazil’s riches in which editors needed to convince their target audiences, kings and merchants, to invest in the exploitation and colonization of the region so that it could secure effective possession of the region and mainly, the writing of a new English history about Brazil and a Portuguese history about the province of Holy Cross.

eles sejam feitos e refeitos o tempo todo.

Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate and question how videogames came to be associated with a magic power which can cause gamers to act violently, sometimes leading to crimes which involve murder and suicide, and, sometimes, to an aggressive conduct which does not involve death, but which offends and injures through language. In order to accomplish this, I review the existing literature of theoreticians who argue that such power exists to criticize their conclusions from two perspectives: 1) I compare and contrast the epistemological bases of researchers working in the ‘media effects’ tradition with the epistemological bases of ethnogaphic research on appropriation, contextualization, resistence and power struggles, and 2) I pinpoint some contradictions which are intrinsic to media effects’ researchers published works. In the interactions analyzed throughout this virtual and textual ethnography, these agressions are  understood to be motivated by discourses which emerge amidst a socio-political-economic scenario where the discourse of mandatory procreation contrasts against the feminist and LGBTQ+ accomplishments in what comes down to sexual freedom. This panorama deprives some heterosexual men from precious resources for the confirmation of their gender and sexuality, such as lifetime marriage and reproduction. Gender and sexuality are thus understood as signs whose meanings are forever deferred, demanding that they constantly be done and redone. This philosophical perspective is operationalized by the constructs of communicability, indexicality and entextualization. By observing real players in situated practices, it was possible to pinpoint that their agressiveness against other players was often motivated by discourses associated with religious fundamentalism and outdated ideas about masculinities. Other times, however, these meanings were challenged in the interactions under scrutiny, suggesting that masculinity can be made differently. At the same time, this indicates that videogames
do not determina the violent conduct of gamers, although they may be the sstage where agressiveness is performed, which makes us think about how we have been acting in this time, where ontological instability is exacerbated.

Keywords: Violence, videogames, performativity, communicability, masculinities.

aprendizagem formal (letramento escolar).

Abstract

The aim of my research is elaborating and analyzing educational processes of knowledge construction on the cartoon genre in a public school situated in Juiz de Fora. The process involved the application of a Didactic Unit (DU), which was based on the concept of didactic sequence as proposed by Dolz, Noverraz & Schneuwly (2004). Its goal is to investigate the implications of the application of that didactic unit to the study of the Portuguese language, in classroom. In this research, cartoons are considered as an action in response to social contexts within a specific culture. I believe that using cartoons as didactic tools in the classroom can be a productive research proposal, because it can foster student’s critical awareness and provide them the opportunity to reflect about knowledge as something that can be analyzed and built through time and space changes, thus representing “a way of thinking and doing things always in a
problematizing way”. (PENNYCOOK, 2006, p.67). Besides, I believe that using cartoons as a pedagogical tool can provide a democratic educational environment to the students selected for this research, because they will have the opportunity to express their points of view in a formal way by engaging in formal literacies and at the same time acquiring and developing a language practice that allows them to show their opinions in situated contexts that demand for adequate literacy. I think that the person’s point of view about a social fact built by literacy practices can “contribute to a particular construction of the citizen, to a particular identity of him/her and a particular concept of action” (STREET, 2014, p.144). In order to develop this research I elaborated a cartoon workshop and applied it to students of the high school of a public school from Juiz de Fora (MG). Specifically, I analysed how the students built their representations about “the situation  of the Brazilian public schools” in the cartoons they made as a task asked by me as the final production of the workshop. The concept of “design” from Multiliteracy Pedagogy was used in order to analyse the workshop as a literacy proposal. The results point out that the cartoons made by the students showed a good articulation between verbal and visual elements, which contributed to an effective representation of the public school. Concerning the workshop, it can be seen as an meaningful literacy proposal because the
students redesigned social issues significantly from a macro context and applied them to their experiences in the micro context. The knowledge construction process fostered by the students’ cartoon productions demonstrates that the educational issues highlighted are genuinely connected to their situated contexts. The cartoon genre appropriation allowed us to discuss the educational situation in Brazilian public schools within a formal literacy context (school literacy). Thus, I believe that using the cartoon genre as a pedagogical tool in the classroom represented a kind of democratic approach to education since students engages in this research could express their critical views about a social situation which is totally related to their everyday life.

Orientador(a):  Prof. Dr. Rogério Casanovas Tilio

Abstract

Instigated by the relationship between the school and contemporary sociopolitical clashes, as well as by emerging ideological conflicts in my territory (a federal technical school in countryside Rio de Janeiro), this research work focuses on processes of writing, uses and effects promoted by a teaching unit entitled Society Matters?, created for critical English language teaching purposes. Aimed at technical-high-school-3rd-grader learners, I have written this unit in dialogue with critical literacy (TILIO, 2017; ANDREOTTI, 2007; LUKE, 2000, 2012; KALANTZIS; COPE, 2012; COPE; KALANTZIS, 2015) and transgression (JERVIS, 1999; PENNYCOOK, 2006) standpoints, as they enable a transdisciplinary and ideological perspective for language teaching (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014) in league with critical thinking, motivated by social problem topics. This qualitative-ethnographic research aims to create intelligibilities upon some potentials of this unit for the lessons, and to contrast them with its uses and effects instantiated in language learning and critical thinking development of a group comprised of 19 learners, who attend High School Integrated Environmental Studies Technical Course. In order to accomplish this objective, I resort to the concept of bricolage (DENZIN; LINCONL, 2005) as a methodological praxis, which allows for an informed seaming of the data generated in the territory, such as: semi-structured interviews with teachers of other disciplines, focal groups with learners, opinion questionnaires and registers in my field diary, besides learners’ textual productions in English. Results show that Society Matters? is regarded as transdisciplinary and fosters ideological encounters that lead to social reflection and perspectivation of thinking by some learners. Also, it suggests that the proposed texts and activities empower discourses and voices of subalterned subjects, thus antagonizing hegemonic discourses of common sense, which enables another posture regarding the problems in our society.

Abstract

This dissertation aimed to study the narrative performances of a quilombola travesti in order to observe how she performatively engaged in different processes of production of subjectivities. An ethnographic in movement (RAMOS, 1990) was carried out in order to follow the space-times she goes through, for example, as the metropolitan area of Guarapuava
and the Quilombo Invernada Paiol de Telha, located in the Swabian colony Socorro-PR. A series of conflicts emerged from this field of study, such as the dispute over the entitling of
the hereditary Quilombola territory and the disputes between the neocapitalist techniques of production of the so-called ‘Germans’ and the sustainable quilombola techniques of
production. These relations, also understood as multiplicities, allowed to question the state governmentality (FOUCAULT, [1978] 2016) and the quilombola performativity (BUTLER,
1990), from the perspective of the focal participant. She produces ways of becoming that are fluid in relation to the state regulations, to the category of gender and sexualities, and to
languages. Through different ‘bajubás’, she produces ways out of the regimes of truth, engendering alternatives of community management and applying ancestral and contemporary
techniques as she moves between the physical-virtual-subjective spaces-times: speaking bajubá, studying, militating, braiding hair, making handicrafts, creating poetry and artistic
performances. Consequently, she produces movements of transterritorialization in relation to fixed states of meaning by reentextualizing different kinds of power-knowledge in the
composition of a Queerlombola Cosmology.

Orientador(a):  Profa. Dra.

Abstract

Historically, the teaching of reading in Brazilian educational system has offered several barriers to the process of autonomous formation of students. In this dissertation, an Applied Linguistics research, we will point out some possibilities of practices for language teaching. These choices aim at the formation of more conscious and autonomous readers towards the dialogic relation they need to have with language use. We contextualize this study with some perspectives that sustain the teaching of reading in our schools, based on the topics listed in the official documents (PCNEM 2000; PCN+ 2002; OCNEM – 2006) and on how the language practices at school have not been helpful on the formation of readers that can act in a critical and autonomous manner in literate practices that are rendered important in our society. The conceptual framework proposed consists on the cognitive researches on the teaching of reading (DUQUE, 2017; GABORA; ROSCH; AERTS, 2013; FAUCONNIER; TURNER, 2002; SINHA, 1999; HUTCHINS, 1995), as long as we assume the perspective of cognition as social and cultural, intersubjective, embodied, integrative and frame-based (LAKOFF, 2004; 2008; DUQUE, 2015; 2017). Therefore, our research presents the role of frame and reframing as structural concepts of a critical reading didactic and as a means of contributing on the identification of the perspectives in journalistic texts. In our dissertation, we summarize the reading theoretical frameworks that are adopted in the teaching of reading, for the past few years; we describe how the New Literacy studies (HEATH, 1983; STREET, 1984) changed the understanding of reading; and we postulate how the researches on cognition and metacognition are the basis of the reading model here proposed. Therefore, to constitute critical reading, we assume that acting on language is acting on frames. Departing from this theoretical and methodological discussion, we present our model of critical literacy for the teaching of reading: recognition (identification and description) of the frames used to categorize events, people and objects around us through linguistic material; analysis of linguistic uses that build up and reinforce the framing; questioning
and evaluation of the possibilities this framing offers of maintaining or fighting against inequalities and construction of self assumptions towards these frames. Then, we analyze and discuss our didactic proposal departing from (1) the description and discussion of potential activities offer to critical reading actions; (2) the identification of the type of knowledge (text information, previous knowledge, inferential information) selected by the reader to answer to the questions, relating the construction of the question instructions to its purpose; and (3) the delimitation of how our reading didactic proposal relates to the theoretical concepts for this dissertation.

Abstract

The objectives of this thesis are as follows: a) to undertand my trajectory and that of other two teachers who participated of the Teacher Development (Continuing Education) Project, entitled Language Practices in different Areas of Knowledge in Public School(PLIEP); b) to review the PLIEP project to question the difficulties faced by me and the other two participants during interactions throughout the project based on the premise informed by the concept of community of practice; c) to reflect on the relation between theory and practice with respect to the teachers’ ideology regarding the concepts of epistemology and interdisciplinary that were present throughout the project. The PLIEP was idealized by teachers of Universidade Federal
do Rio de Janeiro and submitted to Fundação Carlos Chagas Filho de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) in the program for supporting the improved education in public schools called “Apoio à melhoria do Ensino em Escolas da Rede Pública” in 2011. It gathered teachers from three different public schools to elaborate on “Language practices in different areas of knowledge”. The study, which is in line with the qualitative-interpretivist paradigm of the research, uses the project (PLIEP) to focus on two teachers and my identity crisis, opting for
the case study methodology. The study is guided by a vision of education as a responsible act (Szundy, 2014) based on conceptions of language drawn by the Bakhtin Circle (1920-24 [2012]) and understands the continued education in the epistemological bias of the communities of practice (WENGER, 1998). The data are addressed in accordance to the sociolinguistic microanalysis and the theoretical-analytical construct used is the alignment category (GOOFMAN,2002). The analysis indicates that teachers faced difficulties related to the management of the school where they worked, and, upon developing the interdisciplinary project required by the last module professor, they did not notice concrete changes in their pedagogical
practices after the PLIEP. They understand that the academy contemplates theory, but seems to move away from practice. They attribute this fact to the possible distancing of professors from the elementary school. However, they are pleased to participate in the project in subtle moments. Different from the two teachers, it can be said that my micro (de)stabilizations throughout the PLIEP in relation to my continuous development and interdisciplinarity now occupy a space of total (re)signification.

Abstract

This study aims to reflect upon the uses of language in a History class in a public school in Rio de Janeiro. The ethnographic research accompanied the trajectory of a teacher in a State school,
which experienced several strikes during the period of the research and a process of student occupation in 2016. As these destabilizations directly echoed in the development of this study,
I needed to redirect the research trajectory and navigate through mutual (un)learning routes, which were trailed by the teacher and I. In order to bring the situational and extra situational
context of this school in world, I needed to enter in the multiplicity of texts and discourses that circulated in it. Thus, the circulation, the trajectories and continuous intextualizations in the
historicity of such context are highlighted. In order to think about the cooperative construction between the researcher and the teacher having language uses as the focus, I divided our
trajectory in a time continuum. Entwining the frameworks proposed by Bakhtin (1953 [2003]) and Blommaert (2005), I reflected upon the uses of language and cooperative learning built
between the researcher and her collaborator in a school, which was in a dismantling process. As an interpretation of the results it is indicated that the relationship built between the researcher and the teacher was marked by internally persuasive discourses, with protagonism now and then. It also highlights two results of this research: the shakes in the researcher’s ways of doing research; and the collaborative teacher’s awareness of the possibility of exploring the uses of language in the classroom.

Abstract  Analyzing the laughter provoked by Shakespearean comic performances is part of a major archaeological effort, an attempt to reconstruct the meanings transmitted by such representations, taking into account the values, beliefs and knowledges of ElizabethanJacobean audiences. One of the main obstacles is the challenge posed by the ephemerality of theatrical productions, filled with improvisations, facial expressions, tones of voice and unforeseen events that a mere analysis of the dramatic text is not capable of recovering. Aiming at studying the comic performances in the Shakespearean universe, this research concentrates its focus on what is most inconvenient and unpredictable about his theatre; that is, the clown’s comic performances. As it revisits theories on laughter and the comic, this thesis searches for elements to understand the phenomenon of the clown and his functions on the Shakespearean stage. Lastly, it also proposes a typology of comic performances formed by seven main categories: pedants, servants, constables, tricksters, rustics, fools and knights. The objective is to understand what these different humorous representations shared in common and identify which folk, classical, medieval and contemporary inspirations helped moulding them. Keywords: laughter, clown, performance, Shakespeare and the comic.

Abstract  Considering my professional experience, I observe that teachers-generated materials have been attracting educational professionals’ preferences related to technical courses in English language teaching in the federal education sector. Consequently, a great variety of didactic materials have been developed by teachers and teaching teams, in order to meet the needs which these professionals believe are not met by textbooks. However, these materials have also been subject to criticism and research. In this sense, the objective of this work is to investigate a teacher-generated material for reading comprehension in English language based on texts of different genres, specially homepages, that was elaborated by an English language teacher working for a federal technical high school and focusing the Automation course. Henceforth, to understand how the teaching of reading comprehension through multimodal texts originated from new technologies can favor the process of reading comprehension itself and students’ critical awareness before facing the world of employment. In order to understand the corpus, I review the literature on language (Bakhtin, [1953] 2003, Brazil, 2000, Fabrício, 2006, Voloshinov, [1929] 2017), on linguistic ideology (Silverstein, 1979; Woolard, 1998; Bakhtin, 2006; Eagleton, 2007), on discourse genres (Bakhtin, 1957; Dolz; Schneuwly, 2004; Costa, 2009), on literacies (Cope; Kalantzis,1999; 2012; Rojo, 2012; Signorini, 2012; Kalantzis; Cope, 2012), on multiliteracies (Kress; van Leeuwen, 2003; Kalantzis; Cope, 2006; Signorini, 2010; Rojo, 2013) and on Funcional-Systemic Linguistics (Halliday, 2004; Martin; White 2005; Halliday; Matthiessen, 2014). The research methodology consists of the selection of one hundred and twenty reading activities found in the archive of the educational institution involved in this research for the purpose of analyzing ten percent of this total. Thus, the corpus was submitted to the analysis to answer the first question of research concerning the types of exercises proposed by its author, thus it was observed in the light of Kalantzis and Cope’s (2012) didactic, functional and critical literacies. After this, semiosis found in this corpus were analyzed considering Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006) information value, salience and framing systems, as well as Cope and Kalantzis’ (2012) Multiliteracies theoretical constructs. Considering the second research question, the exercises’ instructions had their verbs interpreted by Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) transitivity. And finally, Cope and Kalantzis’ (2012) Multiliteracies ideological dimension as well as Martin and White’s (2005) engagement theory were used to interpret the ideologies projected by the activities. The results of the data analysis reveal that the elaboration of the material has traces from didactic and functional literacies, not considering the instances of the critical literacies and using the images as a mere illustration of the activities’ layout. In relation to the processes (Halliday; Matthiessen, 2014) found in the instructions, I construed that they are primarily the material ones, requiring a passive attitude from the students who are expected to perform tasks without questioning them. Keywords: Language, Linguistics Ideologies; Literacies; Multiliteracies; Teacher-Generated Materials.

Orientador(a):  Profa. Dra. Palavras-chave: Farofaço, escala, performatividade, comunicabilidade, biopolítica, necropolítica, colonialidade do poder, gnose liminar Abstract  The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the textual trajectories that engender conflicting social-spacial-racial relationships among residentes from different places in Rio de Janeiro. I focus, above all, on semiotic disputes constituted about the access of poor communities residents to the beaches of the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The metodology which guides the research is a textual tracking (FABRÍCIO, 2014a; FABRÍCIO, 2014b; RYMES, 2012) – I explore a wide discursive chain, constituted by media constructions that come from different and sparse spacial-temporal dimensions. Based on the concepts of Scale (LEMPERT, 2012; BLOMMAERT, 2015; BLOMMAERT; DE FINA, 2015; GAL, 2016; CARR; LEMPERT, 2016) and Communicable Cartography (BRIGGS, 2005; 2007; 2011), I analyse the way the audience is interpelled in these publications according to specific metapragmatic patterns and the social semantic arising effects. In these interpretative gestures, I create intelligibility by means of the confront between my scale perspectives and the scale perspectives projected in the communicative events observed. I also approach the recontextualizations of some of these productions in interactions available in the digital network studied, specially focusing on the scale works that forecast changes in the correlation of forces involved. In the textual route chosen, I concentrate on a range of discursive happenings performatically connected, that focus on the antecipation of “Operação Verão 2015” – with blitz operations on the way to the beaches of the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, on the violent actions of “Justiceiros”, and on the Facebook event named “Farofaço”. The analyses demonstrated that the mobilization of modern-colonial and civilizing meanings in certain texts constituted hegemonic communicable cartographies that produced subordinate “pretas, faveladas e suburbanas” subjectivities.  On the other hand, the analytic movement also indicated that, although the wide social support, this communicability was creatively refuted by powerful recontextualizations in the social networks interactions studied, allowing the emergence of new stories and performances that recreate the intersubjective relationships in public spaces and project a more democratic city, that welcomes heterogeneity and multiple human existences. Keywords: Farofaço, scale, performativity, communicability, biopolitics, necropolitics, coloniality of power, border gnosis.

Abstract

This work intends to investigate the integration of digital resources to students learning practices in an English language course and their engagement and needs regarding this context. The research questions are: 1) In what technology-mediated learning strategies did students effectively engage during and after the course in which they participated? What characteristics of these strategies favored their engagement? 2) What needs of these students regarding the integration of digital resources in their English language learning processes were evidenced and met in the researched context? And which ones were not? Why? The study is based on a literature review of students’ engagement ((APPLETON; CHRISTENSON; FURLONG, 2008; PARSONS;
RESCHLY; CHRISTENSON, 2012; TAYLOR, 2011; TROWLER, 2010; ZYNGIER, 2009, among others), engagement motivational variables (RYAN; DECI, 2000, 2011, 2012; THOMAS, 2002, 2012, among others), language learning strategies (BENSON, 2013, 2014; OXFORD, 2017, among others), integration of technologies in language teaching and learning (BAX, 2003; BLAKE, 2013; CHAPELLE, 2008; GODWIN-JONES, 2016; REIS, 2013; WALKER; WHITE, 2013; WARSCHAUER, 1996, among others) and the evaluation of technologies integration (ALBERTS, 2013; CAROLL,
2004; VERBEEK, 2005, among others). The data, generated by questionnaires, records of online interactions and interviews, indicate that students effectively engaged in learning strategies mediated by technologies that were, mostly, ubiquitous, simple, adequate, varied, effective, interactive and secure. In addition, the results reveal that students’ needs related to integration of digital resources evidenced in the researched context were fully or partially fulfilled. At the end of the research, a theoretical model to evaluate technologies integration in language learning contexts is purposed from the findings of the investigation.

Keywords: engagement, technologies integration, language teaching and learning.

Orientador(a):  Prof. Dr. Rogério Casanovas Tilio

Abstract

protagonista.

Abstract

This research emerged from a pilot project (TAVARES, K.C.A and OLIVEIRA, A.P.P, 2014) whose results pointed out the need of the inclusive schools to plan, together, actions to be implemented since the insertion of the deaf student in regular classes, in the sixth year of schooling, when deaf and listeners students stay in the same room, in addition to studying a
new language (English) and receiving the presence of the interpreter.
The research, from an ethnographic perspective, aimed to investigate how the participants perceived the instruments of mediation available, as the interpretation in LIBRAS and the digital technologies while learning / teaching English.
The data were generated from the recording of the classes held in a inclusive class of sixth year during the computer classes in a public school in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro,
and from the participants’ own reports about this practice, obtained through interviews and questionnaires.
The precepts of Inclusive School and Vygotsky’s conception of mediation form our theoretical basis for investigation and, to guide the interpretation of the data, I decided to use the Theory of Activity (TA) as a theoretical framework in the analysis by the fact that TA allows the understanding of the data, considering the individual and social levels interconnected at the same time, as well as the activity in context, the historicity of the elements involved and the multivocality of the subjects.
Focusing on conflicts and challenges, we can infer that inclusion happened; but not yet in its fullness. However, the activity generated a dialectical movement that can propitiate
changes in the pedagogical practice of the teachers involved, in the search for a language teaching in which social practices and colaboration be priorities, in opposition to a decontextualized and metalinguistic one, in which the digital technologies of information and comunication can be considered as important allies and in which the student can be its protagonist.

Abstract

This thesis aims to understand, through the sociocultural perspective (OXFORD, 2003), the autonomy (HOLEC, 1979 [1981]; BENSON, 2001, 2006b) of undergraduate students at the Faculty of Languages Portuguese-English in a private university in Baixada Fluminense (Rio de Janeiro) who lack the proper English literacy required for day-to-day interactions in the program. It searches for presenting the basis of the autonomous process related to few of those students who manage to progress in the program when they not only learn the target language itself, in the aspect of use, but also gain knowledge for their development as future English teachers. This work, based on narrative inquiry (BELL, 2002; BARCELOS, 2006; BASTOS; SANTOS, 2013; BARKHUIZEN; BENSON; CHICK, 2014; SWAIN; KINNEAR; STEINMAN, 2015), focuses on the selected participants’ histories and on their clarification that relate autonomy not only to aspects of motivation and identities but also to the dynamics of a system which interconnects them (and other elements), so that autonomous learners in their overcoming process keep on track until graduation. The research therefore also leans on complexities theories (LARSEN-FREEMAN, 1997; LARSEN-FREEMAN; CAMERON, 2008; PAIVA, 2005, 2006; KING, 2016; VAN LIER, 2004; MERCER, 2014a, 2014b, 2015a, 2015b, 2016) as a theoretical and methodological foundation. It exposes an understanding of autonomy which goes beyond the simplistic social-individual dichotomy, and relies on the complex perspective which originally fuses such polarization in the light of Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective (1978 [1991]) and Bakhtin’s theory of utterance (1929 [2006], 1979 [1997]). In the research findings, autonomy is understood as one’s embodied ‘self’ in the individual, yet multiple in many personifications. It is unified by the contribution of the ‘autonomous self’, which plays the role of evaluating experiences as one’s imagined future and those as one’s historical-sociocultural background represented in the self-system.

Abstract

This dissertation aims to investigate the communicable cartographies in the phenomenum known as rolezinho. These events were organized via Facebook and gathered a huge number of young people (especially those coming from peripheries) in different shopping malls throughout Brazil to talk, chat, date and walk around. In Rio de Janeiro, the fast circulation of one of these online invitations, organized to happen in a fancy mall called “Shopping Leblon”, had more than six thousand followers in less than two days, calling the media attention and threatning customers and merchants. Taking into consideration the countless entextualizations in multiple media in Brazil and abroad, spread in a multidirectional kind of circulation, I follow part of the trajectories traced by the texts on rolezinho, tracking their communicable cartografies and the effects they generate. I observe the meaning struggles and the different indexicalities of
“rolezinhos”, building metapragmatic models which point to the everyday social conflicts. I concentrate on the comments posted on the “Rolezinho no Shopping Leblon” Facebook fanpage, on the online daily news G1, on the Facebook fanpage “Estadão” and on two YouTube channels. Methodologically, I follow the textual trajectories in the interacional spaces mentioned in the light of etnography for the Internet (Hine, 2015). The analysis indicates that the semiotic struggles indexicalize an old history of prejudice. However, it is also evident that biopolitical control works intertwined with struggles and resistence, which highlights powerful performances in everyday practices of non submission. This is something that makes us reflect on modernity in a more positive way, from the range of resistance possibilities which modernity itself made feasible. I am aligned to non essentialist and non determinist perspectives of the meaning  construction and I emphasize that texts are the result of “multiple interpretative journeys” (Fabrício, 2014:6) coexisting with a beam of vital forces: biopower and biopotencial.

Orientador(a):  Profa. Dra. Kátia Cristina do Amaral Tavares

Abstract

This research is situated on the interface of Applied Linguistic and aims at contributing to fill in the theoretical-methodological gap regarding the teaching of online reading in the Elementary School. To do so, I investigate the projects and activities on online reading carried out in the computer lab of a federal public school in Rio de Janeiro, with the intention to transform such pedagogical context. I emphasize that online reading is one of the most important digital literacies (SOARES, 2002; FREITAS, 2010, BUZATO, 2006) to be promoted in the school. Then, I discuss aspects of online reading itself and its teaching (COIRO, 2003, 2011, 2014; LEU et al, 2013; COSCARELLI, 2010, 2012; LIBERALI et al, 2015). Assuming that the agency of its participants is fundamental for the transformation of the context, I conduct a critical and collaborative research (MAGALHÃES, 2012; PENNYCOOK, 2011) with intervention (ENGESTRÖM, 2011; MAGALHÃES,
LIBERALI, 2004) and ethnographic aspects (RODRIGUES-JÚNIOR, 2007) based on the Activity Theory (ENGESTRÖM, 1987, 2002; ENGESTRÖM, SANNINO, 2010; DANIELS, 2011). Using several research tools, such as class observation, participation in planning meetings, interviews and questionnaires, as well as document collection, this work investigates the central activity system «Developing online reading projects and activities» inserted in a network of activities highly imbricated, intending that the highlighted conflicts and contradictions may favor the movement towards the context transformation. Data analysis is divided into two parts. In the first one, the central activity system, its components and relations with other activity system are described and discussed. In the second, the contradictions and conflicts are approached. The results show the need of teacher continuing education, preferably in-service formation guided by practice experience. In addition, they point to the engagement of the whole school community in the critical reflection towards the the development of more significant online reading projects and activities, which challenge the student to take a critical approach to the enormous amount of information available on the internet.
