Orientador(a):  Profa. Dra. Kátia Cristina do Amaral Tavares

Abstract

The present master’s dissertation is a qualitative research (CHIZZOTTI, 1992), belonging to the interpretive paradigm of ethnographic case study (ANDREW, 2003; BEAULIEU, 2004; LEFFA, 2006), aiming to investigate the participants’ perception of the role of the moderator (LAGES & O’CONNOR, 2004; DUTRA, 2010; KRAUS, 2007) in an online course to promote continuing education for teachers and in the constitution and development of a community of practice (WENGER, 1998; HANSON-SMITH, 2006; SMITH, 2003) in the context of distance education (MOORE & KEARSLEY, 2008; MANN & STEWART, 2000; LÉVY, 2004; MORAN, 2011; CASTELLS, 2005), highlighting the sense of belonging (DOWNES, 2004; ALMEIDA & MAHONEY, 2007; CODO & GAZZOTTI, 2000; ROGERS, 2009; LÉVY, 2004; DELGADO & HAGUENAUER, 2010; MOORE & KEARSLEY, 2007; MORAN, 2011) perceived by course participants as favoring the creation of a sense of identity (PREECE, 2000 ; TAVARES, 2007) and affection (CODO & GAZZOTTI, 2000; ROGERS, 2009; PEKRUN, 2005; HERNANDEZ et al., 2011; OSTERMAN, 2000; GOODENOW, 1993; FRANCO, 2010) in order to enhance the construction of the learning process (KENSKI, 2008) based on interactions situated in a social and historical context (VYGOTSKY, 1978; FREITAS, 2003; BAKHTIN, 1992). The results of the data gathered were generated through ethnographic instruments (HINE, 2000, 2005a; MASON, 1996) that comprised a questionnaire, an online message to confirm information and an audio-recorded personal interview, and showed the different perspectives of course participants either on the part of teachers or of the moderator. The results pointed to the possible conditions of existence of a community of practice in the online course for continuing education of teachers, despite the absence of intent of the moderator for this purpose. The perception of teachers responding to the survey highlighted the role of the moderator as one of the promoters to set up a community of practice considering the aspects pointed out in the researched literature.

Título: Interação no Processo de Produção de um Programa de Capacitação Profissional

Orientador(a):  Prof(a). Dr(a). Cristina Jasbinschek Haguenauer

Abstract

This paper is the result of a research carried out in the presential and online interactions that occurred among participants who produced the Professional Training Program Welding Inspector. The goal of this research is to identify how the interactions were mentioned and the improvements that could be applied to them and to the production of future projects in order to contribute to the development of other educational solutions. To perform the research, the methodology adopted was case study with a qualitative approach, based on Yin (2009), Leffa (2006, 2009) and Martins (2008), and the method of content analysis of Bardin (2009). The theoretical framework that guided the analysis were Leffa (2006, 2008), Primo (2001), Kenski (2008) and Moita Lopes (2004). The categories of interactions by e-mail refer to routine activities of the design phase and adjustments identified after production validations. On the other hand, the categories of interviews refer to perspectives in presential and online interactions to suggest improvements for the interactions and the process of production and the influence of interactions on the efficiency of the production process. The results show that interactions between participants occurred presentially, through team meetings, and online, via email and Skype. The results also show that presential interactions provided the clarification of issues related to language that were not understood during the online interaction and the number of meetings was not enough. As a result, it became evident the need to increase the presential meetings during the production of new solutions that are aligned to and within the project budget, promote efficient communication from online interactions to avoid language problems and explore new communicational and interactional tools.

compreensão de que práticas discursivas são permeadas por relações de poder (FOUCAULT, 1988/2003), tenho como objetivo central neste trabalho apresentar algumas reflexões sobre como se dão as negociações interacionais de relações de poder em uma sala de aula de inglês para fins específicos em contexto militar, que é historicamente marcado por relações de poder hierarquicamente definidas. Por meio de uma pesquisa de cunho etnográfico, investiguei aulas de inglês de um curso de imersão para controladores militares de voo de diferentes patentes, ou seja, diferentes hierarquias dentro do ambiente militar. Os dados foram gerados por meio de gravações em áudio em um total de 90 horas, além de anotações dos professores e de entrevista de grupo focal com os alunos ao término do curso. Busco, debruçando-me sobre esses dados, analisar como as relações de poder entre indivíduos de status hierárquicos diversos e professora civil são negociadas durante as aulas. Para desenvolver este estudo, utilizei as seguintes ferramentas teórico-metodológicas: performances (BUTLER, 2003), comunidade de prática (WENGER 1998), pistas de contextualização (GUMPERZ, [1982] 1998), enquadre (GOFFMAN, [1959] 1975), alinhamento (GOFFMAN, 1981) e posicionamento (DAVIES & HARRÉ, 1990;

Abstract

Based on the understanding of the classroom as a place where power relations are constructed, negotiated and corroborated all the time (Veiga-Neto, 2003) and also on the idea that discursive practices are permeated by power relations (Foucault, 1988 / 2003), my aim in this dissertation is to present some thoughts on how power relations in a classroom of English for specific purposes in the military context are negotiated through interaction. The research context is historically marked by well-defined power relations. Through an ethnography-based study, I investigated English lessons in a course for military flight controllers of different ranks, that is, they occupy different positions in the hierarchy within the military environment. The data were generated through 90 hour audio recordings, plus teacher’s field notes and a focus-group interview with students at the end of the course. Paying close attention to the data, my aim is to analyze how power relations between individuals of different hierarchical status and a civilian teacher are negotiated during the classes. In order to develop this study, I used the
following theoretical and methodological tools: performance (BUTLER, 2003), communities of practice (WENGER 1998), contextualization cues (GUMPERZ, [1982] 1998), frame (GOFFMAN, [1959] 1975), alignment (GOFFMAN, 1981) and positioning (DAVIES & HARRÉ, 1990; HARRÉ & VAN LANGENHOVEN, 1999). The analysis shows attempts to mitigate the power relations between the civilian teacher and military students and between military teacher and military students in the English language classroom.

Orientador(a):  Profa. Dra. Kátia Cristina do Amaral Tavares

Abstract

Considering the increasing use of blended learning in different educational contexts, this research aims at investigating the benefits as well as the limitations of using a blended learning approach in an English for specific purposes course focused on reading skills according to its participants. It is also intended to discuss similarities and differences between the face-to-face and online environments of the course according to students’ and teacher’s views. Therefore, this study aims at identifying and discuss possible ways to integrate these components. The research is guided by a theoretical foundation about face-to-face education (GRAHAM, 2005; VOIGT, 2007, among others) and distance education (GOMES, 2008; ZIDAN, 2011, among others), focusing on online education (MORAN, 2003; PALLOFF and PRATT, 2007, among others). In addition, it is based on a framework related to blended learning, involving terms related to this approach and its definitions (OLIVER and TRIGWELL, 2005, among others), characteristics and recommendations about the teacher’s role (BAÑADOS, 2006; COMAS-QUINN, 2011, among others), the student’s role (MORAN, 2000; QUEVEDO, 2011) and the design and implementation of the course (SANDS, 2002; STRACKE, 2007, among others). In relation to its methodology, this research has ethnographic basis with critic orientation and collaborative nature. Different instruments were used such as questionnaires, interviews, research diary and messages from the online forums. The data findings show that it is fundamental to raise students’ awareness about the characteristics and demands of the two components of the course. Interaction is also seen as an important item for the appropriate development of both. As a result, it is noticed that the designing and implementation of the course needs to deal with activities and attitudes which benefit integration between face-to-face and online environments.

Título: Performances Corpóreo-Discursivas de Identidades de Gênero e Sexualidade em Redes Sociais: Estabilidades e Mobilidades em diálogo.

Orientador(a):  Prof. Dr. Branca Falabella Fabrício

Abstract

In a world marked by dynamism and constant flow of information, social subjects constantly transit through socializing spaces of global reach, sharing and negotiating new meanings to
their identity constitutions. This study aims to understand how a young man and his interlocutors in three social networks (Orkut, Formspring and Facebook) construct gender and sexuality performances. The data were generated from a virtual ethnographic research in 2011 and 2012, when I experienced and observed the interactions of a former student of a public school in Rio de Janeiro in which I teach with a focus on his gender and sexuality identities. This research sought to understand the two-way dialogue between stable and mobile meanings in  asculinity performances of the research participant; what kind of texts and discourses are entextualized and which effects of meaning entextualizations can generate in different social networks. I add to this work theories that contribute to the understanding of discourse as action (AUSTIN, [1962] 1990; Derrida, [1972] 1988) and of gender and sexuality identities as performances (Butler, [1990] 2010, 2004, 2010). My analytical tools are footing (GOFFMAN, 1974; 1998), contextualization cues (GUMPERZ, 1992, 1998) and textual trajectories (BLOMMAERT, 1997; 2005; 2010). The analyzes show that social networks are socializing spaces in which identity performances can reproduce stable meanings related to gender and sexuality. However, along with the sedimentation of these meanings, mobility and trajectories of texts in these environments enable reorganizations of some meanings regarding these identity practices. In the interactions and local practices observed in this study, the research participant, guided by religion, sexuality and family discourse orders, settles some stable meanings related to gender and sexuality. However, from the constant textual flow and successive processes of entextualization, the young man rearranges some of these stable meanings, causing capillary concussions in the model of hegemonic masculinity. This study opens up space for thinking about how recurrent discursive practices in the contemporary context, such as interactions in social networks, often
discredited by institutions such as school and family, point to fights of meanings and identities clashes – often invisible / unnoticeable in institutional ritualized interactions.

Orientador(a):  Prof. Dr. Dra.Cristina Jasbinschek Haguenauer

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the configuration of blogs about the use of the New Technologies of Communication and Information in education as well as the interactions that happens through them. These blogs are held by teachers and other professionals working in the educational context. The theoretical foundation of this research can be divided in three parts: the origin, constitution and pedagogical use of blogs (FELITTI, 2009, 2010; EFIMOVA & FIEDLER, 2004; PRIMO & SMANIOTTO, 2006; GOMES, 2005, 2007; BALTAZAR & AGUADED, 2005) the notion of Virtual Learning Environments and the blog as one of them (FELITTI, 2009, 2010; EFIMOVA & FIEDLER, 2004; PRIMO & SMANIOTTO, 2006; GOMES, 2005, 2007; BALTAZAR & AGUADED, 2005) and the concept of interaction and how this process occurs in blogs (PRIMO, 2001, 2008; ANDERSON, 2003; REBS & ZAGO, 2011; MATTAR, 2008; GONÇALVES, 2004). This is a qualitative study, adopting an ethnographic perspective and making use of typical instruments of this type of research. We used the following instruments for data generation: the record of content of some
blogs, an Observation Guide for Interactions and interviews. By analyzing the content of ten blogs, we found that their configuration is similar in both the approach to the subject and the inclusion of semiotic resources and connections to Social Networks. Through the use of the Observation Guide and the interview in order to analyze the interactions that occurs in blogs, we observed that: (a) the space for comments and the open pools are the main channels for interaction between participants, because they can provide mutual interaction and (b) interactions occur in different ways, owing the participants involved and the actions taken, with the exception of comments to show gratefulness and report experiences, which predominated in the three blogs selected for the study.
